A Brave Victory

Johannesson scored the winning goal as Real Oviedo fought for the full ninety minutes in front of their own fans, in a match conditioned by heavy rainfall

Real Oviedo picked up three crucial points from a truly difficult match. The game was conditioned by the poor state of the pitch, which was soaked from rain which had started hours before kick-off.

Anquela opted for the same starting line-up as in recent weeks, and the team again repaid him. Despite Rocha missing a penalty on five minutes after a foul on Folch, Johannesson struck just five minutes later, heading home from Linares’ cross from the left. Real Oviedo demonstrated their hard-working, solid, and convincing side from that point onwards, on a pitch which deteriorated even more as time went by. Osasuna didn’t trouble Alfonso’s net, and a loose ball saw another Johannesson effort go wide. Christian Fernández had a chance to make it 2-0 at the back post on the stroke of halftime, but couldn’t quite get his head to Yeboah’s cross from the right.

In the second half Osasuna went in search of an equaliser, but Real Oviedo continued to show their steel. The only chances for Diego Martínez’s side came from set pieces, as the pitch ended the match in an almost unplayable state. When the Real Oviedo players were lacking energy, the Tartiere crowd carried them on. Together they celebrated a crucial victory, marking it with the ‘Iceland Clap’ in honour of the Icelandic international who had scored the winning goal. The players also gave their shirts to the staff who had worked on the pitch for hours both before and during the match.

The team will resume training tomorrow, from 10:30, at El Requexón.
