Real Oviedo needed a victory, and they got it. They earned their win in a difficult match against an opponent also in need of points, and who tested Los Azules to the very final minutes.
Having made two changes to the starting eleven, bringing Mossa and Mariga into the line-up in place of Christian Fernández and Forlín, Real Oviedo gradually grew into the game. Córdoba gave the first warning shot inside the first ten minutes. As the minutes ticked by Real Oviedo increased their possession of the ball, but they struggled to create too many chances. The clearest chances of the first half fell to Toché, who fired wide once while off-balance, before heading wide from a right-wing cross.
Real Oviedo emerged stronger for the second half, putting greater pressure on their opponent when they had the ball. They also managed to create a lot more chances against a Córdoba side who sat back and were content with a draw. The Asturians spent increasing amounts of time in their opponent's box, until they eventually took the lead. Aarón Ñíguez's corner flicked off the head of a Córdoba defender and into the back of the net. With the deadlock broken, Juan Merino's side went in search of the equaliser. Despite some attacks from the Andalusians, Real Oviedo remained solid in defence. Finally, in injury time, a fine Mariga tackle allowed him to play Johannesson through, who in turn managed to hold off the defender and seal a 2-0 victory.
The team added three important points to the tally, which serve to move them up the table. The players will return to training tomorrow, at 10:30.
