A Non-Existent Penalty Decides the Match in Almería

One moment decided a match which had seen the hosts not create any danger before being given a penalty

Lunin and Luismi came straight into the starting eleven for their debuts, as Omar Ramos also returned to a team affected by suspensions at the Juegos del Mediterráneo.
The Asturians started the game well and competed at the same level as their hosts.  Omar Ramos put in a good cross, which Ortuño met and headed wide at the front post.  Almería responded with a driven shot which Lunin tipped wide for a corner.  Real Oviedo didn't create too much danger, but they did defend assuredly, without giving too much away.  Ortuño had the best chance with the home keeper stranded on the edge of the box, but he lobbed the ball just wide.
The balance of play tipped the way of Los Azules in the second half.  They enjoyed more possession and territory, but then came the controversial moment which would hugely affect the match.  The referee blew for a penalty when Arribas did not bring the forward down, and VAR was not used.  Almería made the score 1-0, to the incredulity of Los Carbayones.  Darwin Nuñez converted the penalty, but Real Oviedo responded well.  A fine Luismi header struck the crossbar.  Almería sealed a 2-0 win by making the most of a mistake in understanding between the away goalkeeper and defence.
The team will return to Asturias tomorrow and train at 17:00 at El Requexón.
