Real Oviedo has reached an agreement for the appointment of Fernando Hierro
as the new Head Coach of the First Team. The coach, from Malaga, has signed
a one year contract with the club, with the option of a further year.
Fernando Hierro, 48, was born on 23 March 1968 in Vélez, Malaga. The former
Spanish international, capped 89 times, has accumulated professional
football experience at the very highest level, in both directorial and
coaching roles. He spent the best part of his sporting career with Real
Madrid (1989-2003), winning 5 league titles, 3 Champions Leagues, and 2
Intercontinental Cups. As an international, the Spanish coach took part in
four World Cups and two European Championships, notching 31 goals. He also
wore the captain’s armband for the Spanish national team, as he did with
Real Madrid.
After retiring from playing, Fernando Hierro took the position of Sporting
Director at the Royal Spanish Football Federation (2007-2011), an era in
which Spain made history, becoming Champions of Europe (2008) and World
Champions (2010).
Later, Fernando Hierro joined Málaga Club de Fútbol (2011-2012) as General
Manager. During the 2014/15 season, the coach from Malaga formed part of
the coaching staff at Real Madrid, in his role as Carlo Ancelotti’s
Assistant Coach.
Fernando Hierro is a coach with experience in all areas, at the very
highest level of national and international football, who has shown great
interest in the sporting project of the club. He has offered a firm
commitment to our club, along the lines of the long term growth planned by
Grupo Carso for Real Oviedo.
The coach travelled to Mexico to meet Arturo Elías Ayub, leading
representative for Grupo Carso -majority shareholder for the entity-, in
person. Fernando Hierro will be presented in Oviedo next week, and will
work together with Joaquín del Olmo, to put together the club’s project for
the new season in the Segunda División.
*Arturo Elias Ayub*: *“After talking to Fernando, I have become fully
convinced of the great values he is going to bring to the project that
Grupo Carso is committed to, both in the medium and long term, at Real
Oviedo. The contribution of Fernando Hierro to the project will be
integral, from the junior teams to the huge demands managing Oviedo’s first
team entails. My commitment to Real Oviedo remains intact. As I said two
years ago, when we were in Segunda División B, the aim is to return the
team to the top division within three to five years. We are in the first
year. And I am sure that Fernando will help us to achieve it.”*
*Jorge Menéndez Vallina**: “We are all aware of the demands faced by those
occupying this position at this club, and we are convinced that with work
and ambition, we will reach the heights we all aspire to. Welcome
Fernando, we wish you the best, your work, luck and success will become our
happiness.”*
*Fernando Hierro**: “The project offered to me by Real Oviedo excites me
hugely, given what this club represents in the national game, with the
history and fanbase of a First Division club, and the stability provided by
the absolute backing of Arturo Elías and the Grupo Carso.”*
