Real Oviedo left the Reino de León empty-handed after a match which saw Cultural Leonesa’s desire to stay in the division prove decisive, but with 2,000 Oviedistas cheering on their team until the final whistle.
The match began with a great noise from the travelling fans and only one change to Anquela’s starting eleven, with Verdés coming in for the suspended Christian Fernández. The home side emerged stronger, dominating the play and chances in the first half. Alfonso was forced to intervene within the first minute to deny a fine shot from Rodri across goal. Johannesson had the best chance for the Asturians after half an hour, as he met Saúl Berjón’s left-wing cross to the back post on the volley. Aarón tried his luck from distance but his shot went wide. On the stroke of halftime, Cultural were awarded a penalty by the linesman, and Señé converted from the spot to open the scoring.
During the second half, Anquela brought on all of his attacking talent, to such an extent that Real Oviedo finished almost without defenders. Real Oviedo were the more threatening side during the early stages. Rocha had a shot, and Mossa’s cross from the left was headed towards the six-yard box before being cut out by the defence. In the seventieth minute, Saúl Berjón had a go from a direct free kick, but the keeper tipped it over the bar. Real Oviedo were pushing forward in attack, but the second Cultural goal arrived during the seven minutes of added time. This brought a sad night to an end for Real Oviedo. There was mutual applause between the players and the fans in the stand. The side still have a mathematical possibility of reaching the playoffs, but it will be very difficult now.
