Real Oviedo and Veljko Paunović have reached an agreement for the Serbian coach to become the new first-team head coach for the remainder of the season. He returns to the city which was previously his home as a player, to take charge of Los Azules for the final ten matches of the league season.
Paunović is 47 years old and he enjoyed a good career as a player in Spain, representing several first and second division clubs. As well as playing for Real Oviedo during the 2000/2001 campaign, he also spent time with Atlético de Madrid, Mallorca, Tenerife, Hannover 96, Getafe, Almería, and Partizan, as well as other clubs.
Paunović began his coaching career with the youth ranks of the Serbian national team, before moving on to Chicago Fire in the USA and Reading in England. He would then spend time with Chivas and Tigres in Mexico. With the latter, the coach managed 44 matches and reached a Liga MX final. Paunović now arrives in the Asturian capital with the clear ambition of turning the current situation around and guiding the team through this decisive period of the season.
Veljko Paunović will make no statements until the moment of his official presentation, which will be on Friday at the Carlos Tartiere.
