Real Oviedo left Tenerife in a furious mood, having being denied at least a very worthy point by factors outside of their control.
Making two changes to the starting eleven, with Fernández and Rocha coming in for Johannesson and Linares, Real Oviedo started brightly in a match which had the feel of a promotion playoff. Toché challenged the two centre backs for a ball in the area, but was denied by a foul. Shortly afterwards, about fifteen minutes into the clash, a nonsense penalty was awarded for a supposed tug on Aitor Sanz by Jon Erice. The Tenerife captain dispatched the penalty for the only goal of the game, from what would be the home side’s sole shot on target. Far from letting their heads drop, Real Oviedo reacted very positively, and came to dominate the ball and threaten the Tenerife goal with increasing frequency. Susaeta’s fierce direct free-kick was tipped over the top by Dani Hernández. The same man had another shot moments later, which was gathered at the second attempt by the keeper. Rocha tried his luck with a long-range effort before the break, before Torró had the clearest opportunity, with his header being touched onto the bar by Dani Hernández. Despite the deficit, Real Oviedo returned to the dressing room in good spirits.
Real Oviedo were once again in charge of the match in the second half. Christian Fernández’s header was cleared off the line by the Tenerife defence, albeit with the referee having given a free kick against Real Oviedo in the build-up. With Saúl on in place of Nando, Real Oviedo used a rehearsed corner routine. Jon Erice was freed up in space on the edge of
the box, but he was unable to get a shot in as the referee obstructed him. Hierro brought on all his firepower, with first Linares, and then Michu, coming on in attack. Toché tried his luck again, with a shot across goal which was kept out by the keeper. Real Oviedo kept pushing right up until the final whistle, but couldn’t find their deserved equaliser.
The team will return to Asturias tomorrow on a standard flight.
