Real Oviedo Head Coach, Sergio Egea, today appeared in the Press Room at El Requexón.
The Argentine started by offering an update on absentees for Sunday’s match at the Carlos Tartiere, saying that, “Nereo has pain in his meniscus. We are going to analyse it, but he will be out. Javi (Muñoz) and Juan (Forlín) remain on the sidelines; we must take care of them.”
Regarding the penultimate matchday and Real Oviedo’s chances of reaching the playoffs, the coach of ‘Los Azules’ reasoned that “we have possibilities, and we have to exhaust them. We will think of another framework when we no longer have a chance. We can’t let our heads drop; it's not bad to still have a chance going into the final two matchdays. My experience tells me that. I'm optimistic, but with common sense. The team is competing well, there are good players and I have faith in what we are doing. We will go out to win and will wait and see what happens in the other matches.”
When asked about the squad and his opinion regarding what has been missing and prevented the team from reaching this final stretch with greater prospects, Sergio Egea believes that “it has been a matter of fortune. There were matches we should have won but that have escaped us due to minor details. Analysing the squad, all I can say is that they are great professionals at a really high level. I cannot say anything negative about these players.”
With respect to possible alterations to the starting lineup, the Argentine stated that “we have got three players back and tomorrow we will decide. Alfonso will replace Nereo. I am not one for changing things much. In general terms, we have competed well, and we are not going to do crazy things. We are involving many players from the B team. The B team has competed well, and they deserve the opportunity, but we can’t leave first-team professionals out. We will look for a balance.”
Regarding Bárcenas’ situation, which will see him join up with Panama in the coming days ahead of the Gold Cup, Egea declared that “Yoel has acted very well, and has been very committed. We have allowed him to rest so that he can arrive at his National team in good shape. He will train with us, but he won’t be involved.”
Lastly, talking about his future as Head Coach, the ‘Carbayón’ manager acknowledged that “we have spoken with all parties. I like to talk, it’s positive, and we will look for what’s best for the club. There is a good working environment. When I got here all I had were seven games in front of me. It is true that I would like to continue, but it is up to the directors,” concluded the Argentine.
