The fifth match of the LaLiga SmartBank season saw Real Oviedo face Cartagena FC this Sunday lunchtime at the Carlos Tartiere. The game ended in a 2-0 home win.
Marco Sangalli dropped out of the matchday squad due to a muscle problem, but Ziganda opted for continuity for today's game. The only change to the side which triumphed on Monday in Huesca saw Borja Sánchez come in in place of the Basque winger. Los Azules emerged the stronger side for the match, created the better chances, and dominated the encounter.
The side from the capital of Asturias enjoyed a bright early flurry, with the front men creating a number of chances. Viti had one of the clearest opportunities of the first half in the fifth minute, but his attempt from a rebound went over the bar. Borja Sánchez then had a powerful effort from the edge of the box, while Samuel Obeng also went close. Real Oviedo combined well on the ball and were solid defensively during the first half. Cartagena looked to try to win the ball off the Asturians after the drinks break, but did not threaten Femenías. In stoppage time, a VAR check saw the referee blow for a handball and award Real Oviedo a penalty. Borja Bastón made no mistake from the spot to give Los Azules the lead, and the teams went in for halftime with the score 1-0.
Los Carbayones completely dominated the second half as they looked to extend the lead. They managed to do so from a fine piece of play by David Costas, whose cross into the box was turned into his own goal by an away defender. Los Azules were relentless in their search of goals, with Viti, the two Borjas, and Obeng the key men up front. Ziganda used his bench, bringing on Brugman first, then Javi Mier and Jirka, and finally Joni Montiel. Cartagena were unable to create anything thanks to a fine defensive performance from the whole team.
This win was the second consecutive victory for the team from the capital of Asturias. The side will begin preparations for next weekend's game against Ibiza tomorrow.
