Real Oviedo were unable to offer a triumph to their fans on their league debut at the Carlos Tartiere. Oviedo ended up losing a match that they had quickly found themselves in the lead in, on a matchday in which the fans didn’t want to miss their side’s first home game of the season.
Following a minute’s silence remembering the victims of the attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils, as well as former Real Oviedo fans and players, the hosts dominated the opening minutes. Various corners and attacks on Alberto’s goals went unrewarded for Los Azules, until Saúl found the back of the net. A strong shot angled in from the left went across the keeper and made the scoreline 1-0. However, the joy in the Tartiere was short-lived, as just a few minutes later Rayo Vallecano managed to find an equaliser from a set piece. Verdés had the best chance, not quite connecting correctly with a header following a corner, and the side from Madrid responded with their second goal before halftime.
The second half started with Real Oviedo going in search of an equaliser, but Toché couldn’t reach a fine Saúl Berjón cross from the left. Rayo Vallecano then scored their third goal, before Anquela used his bench to change the system and look for greater threat from the wings. He moved to a back three, with Mossa and Johannesson playing as wing backs. Alberto intervened to deny a good strike from Linares. Saúl Berjón then got his second of the game from a fine individual piece of play, which he sealed by beating Alberto after arriving one-on-one with the opposition keeper. Linares then had the final clear chance, striking the crossbar. Real Oviedo searched for a draw until the ninetieth minute, but were unable to find their reward.
After their first defeat of the season, the team will resume training on Tuesday at 10:00, at El Requexón.
