Real Oviedo left El Molinón with their heads held high fourteen years later. Real Oviedo, suffering many absences, went into the game with Mossa coming in on the left wing. The early minutes were even, but Carmona’s goal gave Sporting the lead from a set piece. However, Real Oviedo quickly responded with a double chance. First Toché’s shot was denied by Mariño, before Saúl’s rebound was cleared for a corner. Real Oviedo did not lose heart in the match, and went into the break still alive in the clash.
In the second half, and with several early substitutions, Los Azules emerged the stronger, and penned Sporting back in their own half for long periods. Verdés, off-balance, couldn’t quite get his back-post header on target, before Carlos Hernández had another headed chance from a set piece. It was not until the final stages that Toché managed to find Real Oviedo’s hard-earned reward. His effort from a rebound provided the equaliser, and did some justice on the scoreboard.
The 1,200 travelling Oviedistas at El Molinón chanted for their players for a long while after the final whistle, and the team returned to the field tothank them for their support and affection.
