With Toché missing through injury, Anquela tinkered with his line-up and formation for the match against a Lugo side which arrived at the Carlos Tartiere in great form. Johannesson and Christian came into the team, as Anquela opted for a defence with three centre backs and two wing backs. Mariga partnered Folch in midfield, with Linares supported by Aarón and Saúl in attack.
The first half was difficult for Real Oviedo, and they found themselves trailing after only ten minutes. Christian Herrera provided a fine finish to beat Juan Carlos and open the scoring. Real Oviedo found it hard to get into the opposition’s area. The two clearest chances fell to Aarón Ñíguez. First, he fired a shot over the bar from the edge of the box, before hitting the side-netting under pressure inside the six-yard box. Christian Fernández cleared a shot off the line which would have made the score 2-0 to CD Lugo just before halftime.
Real Oviedo emerged transformed and started to click, with Johannesson and Mossa becoming braver and increasingly pushing forward in attack. Aarón Ñíguez was toppled in the area, and Saúl Berjón converted the penalty to equalise. Shortly afterwards, Linares completed the turnaround, heading home from a corner. The Galician fought back again though, with Azeez bringing the scores back level, at 2-2. Real Oviedo didn’t settle for a draw with Francisco’s side, however, and pushed on in search of the third goal. Saúl and Mossa worked the ball down the left wing, and the latter’s cross was met superbly on the half volley by Aarón Ñíguez, to provide the third. The goal would give victory and a crucial three points to Juan Antonio Anquela’s men, following a fine second half performance, in front of a Carlos Tartiere crowd who pushed their team on until the end.
