Real Oviedo played their first Copa del Rey match of the season this evening, coming up against CE Manresa in the first round. Luis Carrión opted to make changes, choosing a starting eleven made up of Braat, Sesé, Luengo, Costas, Pomares, Camarasa, Jimmy, Sebas Moyano, Cardero, Masca and Alemao.
The encounter got off to the best possible start for Los Azules, with Masca opening the scoring in just the third minute. The forward headed home from Sebas Moyano's corner to break the deadlock and give the Asturians an early boost. The Portuguese striker found the back of the net once more just a few minutes later, but this time it was ruled out for offside.
The team from the capital of Asturias dominated the play, but as the minutes ticked by they were unable to extend their lead. Eventually, in the 24th minute, Baquero curled home a fine strike to make the score 1-1. Following the setback Los Azules regained control of the game, and youth-academy product Álex Cardero went close to restoring the lead. His effort from a Moyano cross went just off-target, and the two teams went in for halftime with the score 1-1.
The match was more even after the interval, although Real Oviedo continued to have the better of the chances. Second-half substitute Colombatto was brought down in the area, but the referee waved away the calls for a penalty. In addition, the same incident saw Alemão fire home the loose ball, but the official signalled that there had been a handball in the build-up. Luis Carrión's side were unable to find the winner in normal time, and the match went to extra time.
Masca would once again be the key man in the 112th minute, as he capitalised on a fine Viti cross from the right wing to make the score 2-1. Today's victory in Catalonia saw Real Oviedo get through to the next round in the Copa del Rey. Los Carbayones are now focused on Monday's league fixture against Real Zaragoza.
