Cuco Ziganda opted for his usual starting eleven seen in recent away matches, with Javi Mier joining Bastón in attack and Viti and Borja Sánchez on the wings. There was an atmosphere befitting the occasion at the Estadio Gran Canaria and more than 100 travelling Oviedistas, with lots at stake for both teams.
The hosts started very strongly, creating the first clear chance from the very first passage of play. However, the first Real Oviedo throw-in saw Borja Bastón's powerful strike denied but Borja Sánchez able to convert from the rebound to open the scoring. Las Palmas took complete control of the ball following the opener, and would eventually get their reward with an equaliser before the interval, as Moleiro volleyed home from the edge of the box. Brugman then had a great chance on the counter attack. He ran onto a Bastón through ball, but his chip over the keeper went just over the bar.
The home team went in search of another goal after halftime, and Viera would eventually give them the lead following some bad luck for the Asturians. Ziganda turned to his bench to bring on Obeng, Sangalli, Joni Montiel, Hugo Rama and Matheus. Borja Bastón and Brugman both had good chances following pressure from Sangalli, but they were thwarted by the keeper. Pierre then received a straight red card. The match ended with Los Azules continuing to push, but ultimately falling to defeat.
