This was more than just another match. Real Oviedo came up against CD Tenerife today, in an encounter which saw Los Carbayones pay tribute to Pelayo Novo. The Real Oviedo family wished to say goodbye to our former player with a series of acts in his memory, on what was a very emotional day for the whole club.
On the field Álvaro Cervera's side returned to the Carlos Tartiere for the Matchday 31 LaLiga Smartbank fixture against Tenerife. Los Azules lined up with a starting eleven made up of Braat, Lucas, Rodri Tarín, Dani Calvo, Abel Bretones, Hugo Rama, Jimmy, Luismi, Viti, Borja Bastón and Manu Vallejo.
Real Oviedo began the match by trying to take the initiative and attempting to get forward and threaten the opposition goal. Los Carbayones had the first opportunity in the 8th minute through Hugo Rama. After winning the ball following a mistake in the Tenerife defence, the Galician midfielder tried his luck from range, but his effort was kept out by the away keeper. Cervera's side remained on top, and in the 19th minute Bastón went close to opening the scoring. The forward met a fine Lucas cross, but his strike was also denied by Juan Soriano. During Real Oviedo's best spell in the match came the worst news of the first half. Jimmy did damage to his shoulder upon falling to the ground, and had to be replaced by Ángel Montoro in the 31st minute.
After the interval the pattern of the match did not change, and Los Azules continued to dominate. Abel Bretones put in two very dangerous crosses from the left wing which Manu Vallejo was close to meeting, but the attacker could not quite apply the finishing touch to either of them. The minutes ticked by, and Cervera brought on Borja Sánchez in the 73rd minute and Sergi Enrich in the 83rd minute as he looked to grab a winner. The Asturians kept going to the death, and Borja Sánchez would have the final opportunity of the encounter in stoppage time. Following some fine individual play, the academy graduate looked to break the deadlock with a shot from the edge of the box, but it went just wide. The referee brought the game to an end with the final score 0-0.
The team will go back to training from 10:30 tomorrow at El Requexón, as preparations begin for the league match away at Leganés.
