Real Oviedo will go into the final match of the season with the playoff hopes still alive, thanks to victory this afternoon against Sevilla Atlético at the Carlos Tartiere. The match saw a reduced home crowd, with those in attendance frequently demonstrating their discontent with the team’s recent run of poor results.
Fernando Hierro brought Saúl Berjón and Miguel Linares into a starting eleven which would face the crowd’s fury both during the warmup and at kick-off. However, Real Oviedo were in control of the match, and Sevilla’s B team didn’t create too much danger. Miguel Linares and Lucas Torró both saw efforts go close to opening the scoring. Christian Fernández’s misguided cross then ended up hitting the back of the net and turned out to be the only goal of a match in which Real Oviedo would have many opportunities to extend their lead. In the second half, Linares fired wide from a one-on-one against Ondoa. Lucas Torró again tried his luck with a fierce strike from outside the box, which the keeper gathered at the second attempt. Linares then had another chance to get on the scoresheet. He controlled a fine cross from Johanneson, span with the ball, but could only fire at the opposition keeper. Toché was next to try his luck, but his low shot was claimed by Ondoa. Juan Carlos went untested in the Real Oviedo goal, while Linares’ next shot was deflected for a corner. Susaeta was then denied by the away side’s goalkeeper, from a long-range effort. Toché’s header from Christian Fernández’s left-wing cross, and Nando’s shot over the bar from Carlitos’ pass were the final two chances of the game.
Real Oviedo, therefore, will go into the final game of the season with an opportunity of claiming the final playoff place, albeit it still only a slim chance.
