This was one of those memorable days, and it had a happy ending. On their 91st anniversary, Real Oviedo comprehensively overcame a Girona side who currently lie second in the table.
Following the vibrant pre-match party atmosphere seen outside the Carlos Tartiere, the match kicked off with Fernando Hierro making several changes to the team which started last Sunday in Vallecas. Toché returned having served his ban, while Jon Erice also came back into the starting eleven. Verdés replaced David Fernández, and finally Christian had recovered from injury to reclaim his spot at left-back. The first half saw a few clear chances, with Toché seeing his snapshot from inside the box blocked by the away defence. Just before the interval, the linesman ruled out an Real Oviedo goal for offside.
Real Oviedo came flying out of the traps for the second half, and decided the result within ten minutes. Two Toché goals were enough to settle the encounter. The first came from a corner, which was flicked on at the near post by Linares for Toché to bundle in at the back post. Real Oviedo looked to extend their lead, and managed to do so following a fantastic move from Susaeta, Linares and Johannesson. Eventually the full back slotted a lovely through ball into the path of Toché who fired across René into the bottom corner, to make it 2-0. The home defence and Juan Carlos avoided any Girona pressure resulting in a goal, and Real Oviedo were able to celebrate three brave points with their fans. This was the perfect finishing touch to Real Oviedo’s anniversary, and was marked by fireworks at the end of the clash.
The team will train tomorrow, from 10:30, at El Requexón.
