Real Oviedo Head Coach Javi Calleja appeared before the media this morning in the Press Room at El Requexón, ahead of the fixture against CD Tenerife at the Carlos Tartiere.
Asked about this week's signing of Portillo, the Coach explained that "an opportunity came up in the market that we all thought was a good move. There are moments in which, despite having players in that position to cover the role, there are opportunities that you have to make the most of. He's versatile, he has a lot of experience, and you don't often get the chance to add a player of that quality." Despite admitting that there are positions that will be "more of a priority" to strengthen in January, Calleja reasoned that "we always have to be alert to opportunities that come up."
With respect to tomorrow's opponent at the Carlos Tartiere and what he expects from them, Javi Calleja said that "I think they will keep doing what has worked well for them. I expect them to come looking for quick transitions in play, to play on the counter, be direct and hurt us."
Satisfied with the progress of the injured players and asked about the possibility of a change in formation following Portillo's arrival, the Coach stated that "we can play with two strikers at any time, but Portillo gives us something in the half spaces, he knows how to move between the lines... you have to have talent and in a team like ours that aspires for promotion, the fact he comes in with four previous promotions to his name is important."
Happy with "the competition that we have within the team", the Gaffer admitted that "sometimes you have to give continuity to certain players, and that can be damaging for other players who don't get so much game time."
Speaking ahead of the return to the Tartiere, Javi Calleja declared that "we are going for another win, with the mentality of putting in a great performance. Our home is our main strength. That is because our fans push us on. They give us a boost and always help us. We want to thank them with hard work, give them another three points, and make them feel proud."
