Real Oviedo went into their first Copa del Rey match of the season this afternoon in Torrelavega with a starting eleven made up of Braat, Luengo, Tarín, Abel Bretones, Lucas, Montoro, Jimmy, Marcelo, Viti, Obeng and Borja Bastón.
Álvaro Cervera’s side went into match in a focused manner and took the lead in the 5th minute. A fine build-up saw Jimmy find Viti with a long ball, before the Asturian winger swung the ball into the box, and Bastón pounced on the loose ball in the area to open the scoring. Los Azules were on top, and Borja had the chance to double the advantage in the 13th minute, before Tarín also had the opportunity to make the score 2-0.
Gimnástica withstood the pressure, and had a very good chance of their own in the 18th minute. However, French goalkeeper Braat would prove to be up to the test.
Real Oviedo would have one final opportunity prior to the interval. Jimmy won the ball well in the centre of the field before playing the ball in to Bastón in the heart of the area. The forward’s effort went just wide, and the two teams went in for halftime with Los Azules 1-0 up.
Los Carbayones did not want there to be an upset today, and they emerged for the second half with clear intentions. Abel Bretones worked the ball to Marcelo on the edge of the box, and the Mexican’s long-range effort was denied by the home keeper. However, the travelling fans would not have to wait long to double the lead. Borja headed home from Montoro’s free kick to give the team a deserved 2-0 advantage.
However, it was not going to be a simple match for Real Oviedo. The home team cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 53rd minute, before equalising in the 87th. Tarín had a chance to put the Asturians back in front in added time, but the match would end up going to extra time.
Cervera’s side would regain control of the match in extra time, and twice celebrated Sangalli goals. The first was disallowed for offside, but the second would prove enough to give victory to Los Azules and avoid a penalty shootout.
Real Oviedo made it through to the next round of the Copa del Rey today and will be in Thursday’s draw.
