Neither the match scheduling nor the dismissal of Christian Fernández in the 56th minute could defeat Real Oviedo, who were even a missed penalty away from victory.
16,000 spectators turned up on a Friday at 20:00 to demonstrate how important a good result against SD Huesca would be for Real Oviedo and its fans, going into the finishing straight of the season. Fernando Hierro opted for two strikers, bringing in Linares next to Toché up front, as well as replacing Varela with Christian at left back. Real Oviedo dominated the opening minutes, with Linares’ cross flashing across the face of Herrera’s goal in the first chance of the match. Shortly afterwards, however, the first setback of the day would occur, with injury forcing Verdés to be replaced by David Fernández. Real Oviedo gained presence in attack as the first half ticked by, with Susaeta’s free kick being deflected out for a corner by the defence. It would be David Costas who would finally break the deadlock, heading home Susaeta’s freekick at the back post.
In the second half, Juan Carlos had to intervene to claim a low cross into the six-yard box from the left wing. Huesca went in search of the equaliser, and it was then that Christian Fernández saw a straight red card. Johannesson came on for Linares, and Huesca found a leveller, from Carlos David’s header. Real Oviedo were lifted by their vocal crowd, and continued their pursuit of victory until the final whistle. Toché had the best opportunity from the penalty spot after Johannesson was brought down, but Herrera denied him. The match ended 1-1, with Real Oviedo applauded off by a crowd who, like their team, hadn’t stopped believing right up until the end of the match.
The next training session will be tomorrow, at 9:30, at El Requexón.
