Real Oviedo fans flooded into Lugo, with three times as many in attendance as the number of tickets sent to Oviedo for advance sale, making for a great atmosphere in the Anxo Carro. Real Oviedo, whose two changes saw Varela and Borja Domínguez replace Christian Fernández and Linares, quickly took control of the match.
Los Azules dominated possession in the opening stages of the match, and a long ball from Costas was flicked on by Saúl for Toché to sneak in between the two home centre backs and beat Roberto. The goal from the club’s top scorer made the score 1-0. Shortly afterwards, Borja Domínguez tried to find the top corner from distance, but his shot went over. Varela was forced off after a bad fall, and was replaced by David Fernández. Real Oviedo had another chance after Toche’s ball left Borja Domínguez in the clear, but Roberto diverted it for a corner. CD Lugo then found the equaliser from a set piece routine, with Joselu drawing the score level just before half time.
In the second half CD Lugo gained control of possession and thus of the match. Although Saúl had the first chance of the half, from a shot inside the box which was denied by the keeper, Joselu was then able to add his second and give his side the lead in the 62nd minute. Fernando Hierro immediately looked to his bench, bringing on Nando and Michu for Saúl and Borja Domínguez. It was Nando who had the next opportunity, driving forward well before firing wide from distance. Real Oviedo sought the equaliser relentlessly, and eventually saw a goal wrongly disallowed for offside. David Fernández was then taken down in the box from a set piece, but without consequences. As such the final whistle blew with Real Oviedo still searching for at least a point, but ultimately leaving Lugo empty-handed, just as they did at Tenerife.
The team will train tomorrow, from 10:30, at El Requexón.
