Javi Rozada today had his first match as Head Coach and the Carlos Tartiere was back with its team. Rozada made changes to the eleven, bringing Johannesson, Christian Fernández and Edu Cortina back in.
Nerves were apparent in the early stages, although the first chance fell to the hosts and to Ortuño. The striker shot wide from outside the area. From a passage of play which owed much to the current mental state of the team, Extremadura appeared to have opened the scoring through an own goal, but it was ruled out by VAR. This seemed to wake Real Oviedo up, and with the passing minutes they grew into the game. The best chance came in the 25th minute, when Edu Cortina headed against the crossbar from Saúl Berjón‘s corner, before Casto produced a fine save to keep the rebound out. Real Oviedo tried to take control of the match, but didn’t have too many more opportunities to open the scoring before the break.
The first chance to break the deadlock in the second half again went the way of the Asturians. A fine Mossa cross found the head of Ortuño, but the keeper denied him. Javi Rozada shuffled his pack and brought on Jimmy and Joselu. With the match seemingly under control and from a Real Oviedo attack, Extremadura made the most of defensive errors to open the scoring with a Kike Márquez goal. It was a painful blow, but Real Oviedo recovered. Borja Sánchez came on for Arribas as the team pushed forward. Javi Rozada’s side surged on, creating many chances, and Ortuño eventually made the score 1-1 from a Saúl Berjón cross. He could have doubled his tally, but Casto denied his header from a Borja Sánchez cross. Real Oviedo also had several chances from set plays, but, with the Tartiere pushing them on, they couldn’t find the reward they were looking for. Javi Rozada’s first game as Head Coach ended in a 1-1 draw.
