The Cup Run Ends and Thoughts Turn to LaLiga

Real Oviedo fall to defeat against Atlético de Madrid in the Round of 32 in front of a fine Tartiere atmosphere

Real Oviedo played Atlético de Madrid in the Round of 32 in the Copa del Rey tonight, before an atmosphere reminiscent of matches at the old Tartiere and with a palpable sense of nostalgia. Álvaro Cervera opted for a starting eleven made up of Tomeu Nadal, Rodri Tarín, Dani Calvo, Lucas, Abel Bretones, Jimmy, Mangel, Hugo Rama, Viti, Koba Leïn and Obeng. A minute's silence was held prior to kick-off in memory of Pelé.

Los Azules were backed by a record turnout of fans at the Carlos Tartiere, who pushed the team on right from the outset. Obeng would go close to opening the scoring on two separate occasions, before Rodri Tarín's effort from Hugo Rama's set piece went inches wide of Oblak's post.

Little needs to be said about the quality of Atleti's players. The first time that Griezmann received the ball close to the area, he would provide a superb through ball which enabled Marcos Llorente to put the visitors into the lead.

Los Carbayones continued to stand up to their first-division opponents, and would actually be on top for many periods of the encounter and have chances to equalise. Borja Bastón, who came on in place of Koba Leïn during the halftime interval, fired just wide after receiving the ball from Viti, who had also had his own opportunity during the first half.

Real Oviedo kept going to the end, but hopes would fade after Pablo Barrios made the score 2-0 in the 83rd minute. Los Carbayones' thoughts now turn to the weekend's match in Andorra.
