Real Oviedo fought and suffered but could eventually breathe a sigh of relief. Today’s victory was a necessary one in order to recover confidence. The hard-earned triumph was the result of fast, direct football from Real Oviedo, who saw Saúl Berjón make his first start and play a key role.
Real Oviedo struggled to get into the game in the opening minutes. The rain above the Tartiere stopped shortly after Juan Carlos’ first stop, from a low effort which was heading towards the left-hand corner of the goal. Meanwhile Los Azules’ first attack was brought to a halt with Toché tumbling in the box, before the Elche goalkeeper just beat Linares to Saúl Berjón’s cross in the next move. Berjón then created two further opportunities in attack, first from a fine individual effort from the left wing, which was again denied by the keeper, before another powerful shot was kept out by the Elche stopper. Elche then tried their luck from Pablo Hervias’ free kick, which went wide. Linares tried to open the scoring, from Susaeta’s pass but he was again denied by the keeper, before Berjón created the final Real Oviedo chance before the interval.
In the second half Real Oviedo’s siege continued, and the goals finally arrived. The first came from a fine Saúl Berjón assist, with Toché meeting his cross at the near post to open the scoring. Jon Erice tried his luck from the edge of the box, before Linares couldn’t quite apply the necessary finishing touch under heavy pressure from the defence. Susaeta did however then add the second goal of the encounter, making a fine tackle in the box and firing home into the bottom corner of the net. Linares and Berjón would have two more chances, before Nino managed to grab a goal for Elche, bringing Alberto Toril’s side back into contention in the match with twenty minutes remaining. The Tartiere drove the side on and Real Oviedo defended for their lives, ensuring that the three points remained in Asturias.
The team will return to training tomorrow, Sunday, at 10:30 at El Requexón.
