Real Oviedo were back at home this weekend, coming up against CD Tenerife, as they looked to get back to winning ways in the league. Head Coach Luis Carrión opted for a starting eleven made up of Leo Román, Viti, Oier Luengo, Dani Calvo, Abel Bretones, Jimmy, Colombatto, Seoane, Sebas Moyano, Paulino and Alemão.
Real Oviedo emerged strongly for the encounter, dominating the possession and creating the best chances. In the 12th minute Alemão went close to opening the scoring, but he was unable to apply the necessary touch to a good cross from the right wing. Los Carbayones continued to push forward, but were lacking the final ball. CD Tenerife grew into the encounter and, after going close from a low cross into the box, Jeremy Mellot fired a low strike into the bottom corner to make the score 1-0 to the visitors. Luis Carrión's team deserved to level the scoring before the interval, but Oier Luengo headed the ball against the post. Half-time arrived with the score still 1-0, but with the whole second half to try to turn the match around.
The Coach brought on Masca in place of Jimmy during the interval, and the change provoked an immediate reaction. Masca and then Alemão both went close, with two clear chances to level the scoring, but their efforts went just wide. Shortly afterwards, Sebas Moyano struck the woodwork with a fine strike from the edge of the box, as the hosts grew ever closer to equalising. Millán and Bastón came on for Alemão and Sebas Moyano, with Luis Carrión throwing everything at the search for at least a point. Los Azules started to create more and more opportunities, but the visitors held on to their clean sheet. Lucas Ahijado and Borja Sánchez came on in the last changes, as the match entered its final stages. Just before the 90-minute mark, Borja Sánchez was clearly brought down in the box just as he was about to shoot, but the referee, incomprehensively, decided not to award the penalty even after checking VAR. The Tartiere crowd could not believe it, and the match went into nine minutes of stoppage time. Bastón had the last chance from a first-time effort which went just over the bar, and made clear that today was not going to be the day.
Today's undeserved home defeat sees Real Oviedo finish Matchday 37 in eighth place in LaLiga Hypermotion with 55 points.
