Real Oviedo returned to the Carlos Tartiere in style following two consecutive away matches, including defeat at La Romareda last time out. They produced a professional performance in front of their own fans, with a victory keeping ‘Los Azules’ firmly in the playoff picture.
With Carlos Martínez coming in for Mossa, Real Oviedo pushed Johannesson upfield onto the wing, and switched Bárcenas to the left. The pitch was in good condition and so were the home side, as Champagne denied Cádiz from their first attack. Carlos Hernández responded by opening the scoring. He nudged home at the back post after Cifuentes denied the initial effort from a corner. The home side continued to create the majority of the chances during the first half. Joselu headed wide, before Johannesson narrowly failed to get strong enough contact on Folch’s cross. The visitors equalised in the 40th minute through Machís, but Real Oviedo bounded
straight back by retaking the lead. Bárcenas went on a fine solo run down the left before being denied by Cifuentes, but Johannesson arrived first at the rebound to make the score 2-1.
A lot of running and battling was required in the second half. Machís had a great chance, but he was frustrated by a great Champagne save. Real Oviedo then fashioned two more clear chances. First Bárcenas’ effort almost caught out Cifuentes, before Joselu had a go on the turn, but he was again denied by the keeper. Folch had a go on the volley from the edge of the box, but Cifuentes was up to the test once more. Javi Muñoz, Ibra and Jorge Mier all came on. Joselu had the best chance of the latter stages. He headed wide from Johannesson’s fine cross from the right wing.
The Tartiere crowd helped push their side on in the final minutes, and the hosts claimed the three points. The team will return to training at 10:30 on Tuesday at El Requexón.
