The final match of 2021 and first of the second half of the season for Real Oviedo saw them face SD Ponferradina today at the Carlos Tartiere. The team from the capital of Asturias ended the encounter with a 2-0 victory.
Los Azules went into today's match with the aim of picking up three points, and with a team featuring a number of changes. The biggest news was the selection of Javi Moreno and Javi Cueto, who stepped up from the B team to cover for the players missing through Covid-19.
Femenías; Javi Moreno, Dani Calvo, Bolaño, Pierre; Jirka, Jimmy, Luismi, Borja Sánchez; Viti and Javi Cueto made up the starting eleven for today's encounter. The first half began with the early dismissal of Edu Espiau following a VAR check, which showed him to have fouled Jimmy. Los Azules were on top during the opening forty-five minutes, with the Asturians well-organised defensively and dominating possession as they looked to threaten the visitors. The best chance of the first half saw Jirka volley just wide of the upright.

After the taking the lead Ziganda's side kept pushing in search of a second goal, which would eventually arrive from the penalty spot. Pombo converted the spot kick to make the score 2-0. Ponferradina went down to nine men after one of their players showed his displeasure with the referee. Sangalli had another good opportunity to extend the lead still further, before Costas and Joni Montiel came on in the final changes.
